Travel's Fame Game

The above photo isn’t it.

That’s Bibi Ka Maqbara. In English: “Tomb of the Lady.” It’s another Mughal monument to loss and love, and practically no one outside India has ever heard of it.

Not so the Taj, of course. Its world famous. The white dome appears on postcards, coffee-table books and Instagram feeds so often it’s less a building, and more a logo. Certainly it’s a backdrop. Trump posed there. So did the Clintons. And a lovelorn Princess Di. Each year millions of lesser mortals make the passage to Agra, joining the entrance queue to view what may be the most celebrated collection of carved stones ever built.

You should go.

The Taj is simultaneously delicate and astoundingly massive, even from the air. It shouldn’t be missed and deserves every superlative ever written about it. But its unknown relative is equally fascinating.

Bibi Ka Maqbara lies 650 miles south of the Taj, in Maharashtra state, in the city of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar—formerly Aurangabad. At first glance it feels like the Taj’s body double. The same four slender minarets guard a luminous white dome. Also, a long reflecting pool that pulls your eye toward the mausoleum, and its formal Mughal gardens divide the grounds into geometric perfection.

For a moment, you wonder if you’ve somehow wandered back to Agra.

The resemblance is no accident.

The Taj Mahal inspired generations of imitators, from scaled-down replicas to extravagant private mansions. None, however, approaches the ambition of Bibi Ka Maqbara. Built in the 1660s, roughly 20 years after the Taj Mahal was completed in 1648, it wasn’t trying to compete with the Taj. It was continuing a family’s decades-long conversation with grief.

Even architecture can sprout a family tree.

As many people know the Taj Mahal was commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan after the death of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Two decades later, Jahan’s son Aurangzeb faced a similar heartbreak.

His wife, known to history as Rabia-ud-Durrani, died shortly after giving birth to their fifth child. Their son, Prince Azam Shah, oversaw construction of her mausoleum. His architect, Ata-ullah, was the son of one of the Taj designers.

Walk through the gateway and the similarities with the Taj are unmistakable.

The gardens follow the classic Mughal charbagh plan, symbolizing the four gardens of paradise. Water channels divide the landscape. Fountains punctuate the approach. A mosque anchors one side of the complex. Every line seems intended to slow your pace before you reach the tomb itself.

But Bibi Ka Maqbara shows off something the Taj never does.

A budget.

Shah Jahan spent lavishly on the Taj Mahal. Aurangzeb famously did not. Whether out of personal austerity or an empire stretched by expensive military campaigns, the budget for his wife’s memorial was tightly controlled. Marble was reserved primarily for the dome and key decorative elements, while much of the rest of the monument relied on finely finished plaster over basalt.

The result earned it the nickname: “the poor man’s Taj.”

I think that misses the point entirely. Calling Bibi Ka Maqbara the "poor man's Taj" is like calling Asa Butterfield the poor man's Tom Holland. The comparison tells you less about talent than it does about celebrity.

I mean, would you call Siena the “poor man’s Florence”?

And I don’t think Bibi Ka Maqbara is in any way diminished because another architectural masterpiece is far more famous. If anything, its quieter scale makes it easier to appreciate. Instead of bulldozing past group tours from Hunan or Dayton, you find yourself noticing the carved latticework, the delicate floral details and the changing light sliding across pale stone.

With fewer folks about, the building has room to breathe.

And so do you.

Visit the Taj Mahal and your expectations are lining up before you get there. Bibi Ka Maqbara, on the other hand, asks nothing of you before walking through the entrance gate.

There is no obligation here to pose for the perfect selfie. Look where I am! Instead, the tomb offers you something increasingly rare: enough quietude to ponder the people who built it and the people whose memory they built it for

And that may be the real fame game. We’re compelled to visit what we already know, while other, equally extraordinary places wait patiently in the shadows for us to notice them. Our travels become richer when we finally do.

Lusting for Lecce

NOTE: A while back I included Lecce in “Here Not There,” my book on unconventional travel destinations. Today interest in the city is at full boil. Some thoughts on what that might mean.

Blame the Milanese.

Researching my National Geographic book in the fall of 2022, I was invited to dinner at an outdoor restaurant on the Via Umberto near the Basilica di Santa Croce and Lecce’s old Jewish quarter, the Giudecca. Lecce, if you don’t know, is a small city located in Puglia, the stiletto heel of the Italian boot. I was eating with a group from Milan: A newscaster. An academic. A sprinkle of bankers. Lovely people, the Milanese. They admire beauty, but they also know when it’s undervalued. When the conversation transitioned from politics to real estate, I discovered my dinner companions, every last elegant cashmere-wearing one of them, were long on Lecce. Snapping up neglected apartments and centuries-old homes, restoring them one limestone block at a time.

I remember thinking: If Milan has discovered Lecce, the Americans cannot be far behind.

We weren’t.

Fashionable destinations travel a familiar road. First come the artists. Then the gays. Then the architects. Then the design magazines. Then the boutique hotels. Conde Nast Traveler. Finally, Ryanair flights. Lecce hit that highway with remarkable speed. 0 to 60 in two years.

By 2024, Puglia was welcoming six million visitors a year—10.6 percent more than the year before—and Lecce had topped one million overnight stays for the first time.

I admit to mixed feelings. Discovery isn’t entirely bad. Places deserve investment. Bereft buildings deserve new life. The young deserve reasons to stay rather than leave. Tourism, when done thoughtfully, can rescue craftsmanship, restore neighborhoods, and keep historic cities alive instead of turning them into museums.

Still, every place has a moment when discovery changes from a compliment into capitalism.

Lecce got there sooner than I knew.

The city always possessed the ingredients modern travelers crave. It is walkable. Beautiful without trying too hard. Warm for much of the year. Close to two seas. Surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, and the old fortified masserie have become some of rural Italy’s most coveted hotels.

Unlike Florence or Venice, Lecce never seemed exhausted by its own popularity, and its beauty rewards patience not bucket lists.

The locals call their honey-colored limestone pietra leccese. Soft enough to carve almost like wood, it gave generations of sculptors permission to indulge themselves. Boy, did they. The city’s Baroque architecture feels theatrical. The ochre slabs erupt with cherubs, fruit, flowers, saints, monsters, and impossible curls of stone. The façade of Santa Croce doesn’t merely decorate the building; it sings to you. It’s the Bad Bunny of churches. You may not understand the lyrics, but you’re riveted by the performance.

The street life’s no slouch, either.

Each evening, families emerge for the passeggiata, or evening stroll. Teenagers orbit the piazzas. Elderly couples reclaim familiar benches. Everyone eats gelato. Nobody appears to be in much of a hurry, which is perhaps Lecce’s greatest luxury. It’s a rhythm with deep roots.

Lecce has reinvented itself throughout history. Messapians settled here before the Romans absorbed it into their empire. A Roman amphitheater still lies partially exposed in the heart of town, overlooking my AirBnb and a reminder that spectators have been gathering here for nearly 2000 years. Byzantines, Normans, Swabians, Angevins, and Spaniards all left their mark. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as Spain fortified this eastern edge of its empire against Ottoman expansion, wealthy bishops, merchants, and noble families transformed Lecce into one of Europe’s great Baroque cities. Even the Jewish quarter tells a longer story—one of prosperity, expulsion, forgetting, and gradual remembrance. Few Italian cities carry so many historical layers.

Maybe that’s why Lecce never seemed eager to advertise itself. For years, it felt content being itself. Until now.

The word is out.

In 2025, visitor arrivals to Puglia climbed another 13 percent, with foreign tourism surging 25 percent. And this year, I bet, it’s higher still. Overseas home buyers’ inquiries have surged. Americans, once content with Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast, increasingly look elsewhere for authenticity—the funny thing being that authenticity has a habit of retreating once enough English speakers arrive looking for it.

I’ve watched this happen before. In Tulum. In Marfa. A place grows famous for not being famous and the qualities that drew people are eroded by the ensuing torrent of travelers.

No city remains frozen in amber, nor should it. Cities are living things. They deserve prosperity more than preservation for preservation’s sake. But they also deserve memory, I think.

The Lecce I hope survives isn’t simply a collection of Baroque façades. It’s the city where conversations linger over coffee until noon. Where elderly neighbors still know which family once lived behind which wooden door. Where craftsmen still carve the limestone. Where the evening promenade matters more than any tourist dollar.

Travel has always involved paradox. We search for places that feel undiscovered while participating in their discovery.

Perhaps the best we can do is arrive there humble pilgrims. Spend more time than money. Learn a few words. Walk don’t rush. Eat where families do. Respect that the city belongs first to the people who wake up there every morning to sweep their stoops, not to those of us lucky enough to borrow it for a few days.

Lecce’s quiet era is ending. The Milanese are there. The Americans are arriving. It was all probably inevitable.

I only hope that as the world falls in love with this remarkable city, it falls in love gently enough to respect it—and the traditions that made Lecce worth discovering in the first place.

Braking for Americans

Jordanian manners are as polished as their almonds. While visiting Petra, several of us were trying to get a table for a buffet supper in our hotel. Seats were filling up fast. An older woman in our party asked a waiter for help. He was well-groomed, dashing, to use an old school word. In fact, every Jordanian I’ve encountered has been as dashing as they are gracious. Accommodating three millennia of colonizers—Greek, Roman, Byzantine, British—will do that. Just wait them out. They’ll go home eventually. Here, the new invaders, American tourists, were grabbing the good seats. The waiter sprang into action.

“Madame,” he said, “No worries. I will find you your table. I swear it. I will rip out my heart for you.” He clutched his chest and flung his hand toward us.

“No need for that,” I said. “We just want to eat.”

Instantly, gracious became robotic. Without another word he got us a table, sat us professionally and left. I had made a mistake. What I took for over-the-top hospitality was nothing of the sort. He was expressing his commitment to his craft and to hospitality itself. Embarrassed by his effusiveness, I had brushed it aside with my response.

I had done the American thing. To not read the room. To mistake sincerity for exaggeration. To forget history is still in the room.

Doing the American thing. Is it important to be alert to it? Always. Especially now. Countries have long memories. Travelers should too.

The American thing usually doesn't happen in museums. It happens at the table. That's where culture is on the menu—and sometimes so are we.

I once attended a very formal meal with other travel writers in a Swiss castle turned hotel. It was run by a French woman entering Catherine Deneuve territory. Impeccable manners. Coiffed blond hair. A simple tailored suit that could keep its lines in a five-alarm fire. Quite a contrast to all of us writers in our dusty travel duds.

We trooped into a candlelit dining room. My colleague seated next to me, was an Oregon writer. She had spent the entire press trip talking about food. Not what she wanted to eat. But what she couldn’t. She was a declarative vegan, meaning she declared it at every meal. Even breakfast. By the time we pulled up to the schloss we wanted her gone. Swept away, maybe, by an avalanche of lentils.

The night promised elegance. The settings were as polished as our host. Crystal glasses and goblets. Rosenthal china. Heavy silver for every course. As the starters were served, we all introduced ourselves. Our Beaver State friend piped up.

“I’m from Portland. And I’m a vegan.” She announced to the host as the waiter made his way to our end of the table.

The starter was carpaccio de bœuf, sliced as pink and as thin as a carnation’s petal.

“I’m vegan.” She repeated herself when the plate was placed before her.

Oh good, I thought. Maybe they’ll give her a turnip.

But it was not to be. This was an elaborate, artful meal planned by someone who didn’t factor in the American insistence that every individual’s palate must be indulged. Another guest would have simply let the bœuf be and await the next course. But no. Thinking our host didn’t understand that diet was a declaration of a self that must be catered to, our writer decided to be kind. She elaborated.

“I don’t eat meat.”

Our host took her guest’s measure. The damp hair, the peasant blouse, the travel bag that said “Powell's Books” draped over the small velvet chair. Then she spoke:

“I’m so very sorry for you,” She said without the slightest hint of pity. She then turned to the man at her left. They spoke in French.

The vegan wasn’t being ignored. She and her tiresome food issues had simply ceased to exist. Our host never spoke to Portland again.

It certainly had an impact. The dietary pronouncements vanished for the remainder of the trip. It was a lesson worth remembering—assuming one’s habits and expectations are universal rather than only American customs.

Land by Maggie O’Farrell

Ireland and Quebec make an unlikely pair until you realize both are places shaped by departures. One sent people away. The other received them. The novel Land by Maggie O'Farrell moves between 1860s Ireland and Quebec, two landscapes that keep history out in the open. Ireland with its stone walls, weather, and memory, is a place where the past has a habit of sitting down beside you uninvited. Quebec, meanwhile, feels like the Old World washed ashore in the New.

“In Travel Book Club we had a lively discussion of O’Farrell’s The Marriage Portrait which was set in Renaissance Florence,” Amy says. “Her latest novel conjures Ireland and Quebec, both are places I absolutely love for their natural good looks and their main character energy.”

So true. Both locales possess what readers crave: scenery with a backstory and a sense that every road leads back into history and the human condition.

The Wreck of the Mentor, by Eric Jay Dolin

“I have a special place in my heart for Pacific Islands, maybe because my parents are from the Philippines,” Amy says. “And this book is the true story of an American whaling ship that wrecks in the western Pacific archipelago of Palau in 1832.”

Today, Palau is the kind of destination we all dream about—an emerald scatter of islands floating in impossibly blue water, where WWII vessels rust beneath the coral. But when the American whaling ship Mentor wrecked there, paradise looked more like catastrophe. That's one of travel's enduring contradictions. The places we spend thousands of dollars trying to reach are often the very places sailors, settlers, and explorers desperately hoped to avoid.

“Palau now firmly sits on adventurous travelers’ bucket lists,” Amy says, “so I think it’s ironic that when the crew of Mentor found itself grounded there, it was considered a tragedy.”

Daughters of the Sun and Moon by Lisa See

Most visitors come to Los Angeles knowing it’s America’s city of reinvention. Lisa See's latest novel Daughters of the Sun and Moon reminds readers the city has always been built on that premise. Set in the years after the Civil War, it follows three Chinese women navigating a young LA wrestling with growth, prejudice, and competing visions of who belongs in it.

“I learned so much about the culture of tea in China from reading See’s The Tea Girl From Hummingbird Lane,” Amy says. “Her latest novel follows the stories of three recently immigrated Chinese women during a time of anti-Asian sentiment.”

This isn’t Hollywood, but a town shaped by immigrants, laborers, merchants, and communities that helped build the city while often being written out of its mythology. Walk through Chinatown today and you're not just navigating a neighborhood. You're standing inside one of America’s longest-running arguments that continues even now.

Travel and reading have always been close cousins. One allows us to visit places we may never see. The other sends us in search of places we can’t stop thinking about. Make room. Airlines expect six million Americans to cross the Atlantic this summer

I returned from Europe two weeks ago, and if you’re headed there this summer I’m afraid you’re going to have to work a little harder to connect with the Old World. To borrow an old British complaint about American GIs during World War II, we're “overpaid, oversexed, and over here.” So much so I fear your vacation won’t be so much Emily in Paris as Emily in Paris, Texas.

This HOKA-shod invasion force has been assembling for a long time. Last year it stormed Cap d’Antibes. The year before Positano. This summer it’s Albania. Albania! But for me it all got real when Rome started charging admission to a fountain.

Not the Colosseum. Nor the Vatican Museums. Payment’s expected in those places. But the Trevi Fountain? Tourists are lining up to pay €2 for the privilege of standing shoulder-to-shoulder to toss a coin into the water.

I should have known. The last time I was in the Eternal City I stayed on the Via della Murrate that runs smack into the Trevi. I bunked at the Maalot, a charming luxe hotel, with a good palazzo bone structure (and a bartender who stirred up a terrific gin martini). A stay there felt like fingertips on velvet. The city seemed mine for the asking, until I stepped out on the street.

Rome’s builders, its emperors and popes, never imagined this footsore thicket of humanity, ignoring their great works, eyes cast downward, as their phone’s GPS guided them towards their goal: a glimpse of the Trevi and an elbow in their back from the next arrival. Each day some 30,000 people follow the same route. I fled back to the bar.

It is all too much in a city still absorbing the impact of the 2025 Jubilee year that brought tens of millions of visitors into Rome, pushing tourism to record levels. So to manage the crush the city introduced a €2 admission fee this past February active between 9 AM and 10 PM.

A charge to see a public fountain feels like a small thing. Until you realize it isn’t. It’s Rome’s present and Europe’s future. It’s also something more unsettling.

The crowds are no longer merely annoying. They’re now the defining experience.

In Florence, last year, roughly 365,000 residents shared the city with more than 4.6 million visitors. In Paris, Montmartre residents lament that one of the city’s most beloved neighborhoods (theirs) is becoming “Disney-fied,” its cafés and shops evolving from parts of a living city into props for the global tourism machine. In Venice there are entrance fees and crowd-management systems that would have sounded absurd 20 years ago.

Toss a coin in the fountain? At the Trevi you’ll need to cough up.

Meanwhile, rising destinations like Dublin are beginning to confront that hard question: How much tourism can a place absorb before it begins changing into something else?

Each city weaves a slightly different thread, but together they tell the same story. Europe’s most famous places increasingly resemble theme parks. But you can’t just blame the Americans. Or the Chinese. Or the Indians. Europe has welcomed travelers for centuries. The problem lies in their concentration. The Trevi Fountain requires crowd controls because everybody wants the same damn selfie at the Trevi Fountain.

And that’s not working: thousands of us are chasing the same places for the same experience on the same day. It’s the assumption there are only 20 European destinations really worth “doing.” There’s the West End. And Paris. Florence, Venice and Rome, of course. Add Barcelona, the Amalfi Coast, Provence and wherever the next season of White Lotus winds up (Spoiler alert: it’s Cannes). Add the year’s hottie destination. Albania! Bingo. You have the same itinerary as everyone else. Everything else becomes Spokane.

My apologies to Spokane. As you'll be reading here shortly, Spokane is an amazing city. Unique, playful and under appreciated. Its sin? It’s an unknown quantity. And with travel so expensive, who dares take a risk of going somewhere obscure? In Europe there are plenty of cities just as unfamiliar. And most all of them are worthy of your consideration.

I can think of a couple right off the bat.

Lecce, in Italy’s deep south, where baroque churches glow the color of honey and evening passeggiatas are still conducted primarily by its residents.

Ljubljana, Slovenia’s compact and improbably civilized Hapsburgian capital, where life unfolds beside a river instead of around a selfie queue.

Gdańsk, Poland’s famed Hanseatic port, back from wartime destruction and somehow still overlooked by the junior-year-abroad crowd rushing between Berlin and Prague.

And in German, a compact jewel of a city named Erfurt, where a food stall operator might hand you a free bratwurst to try because they want you to understand Erfurt’s bratwurst is the best in the country.

Erfurt is just two hours by high-speed rail from either Frankfurt or Munich airports.

These cities possess something increasingly rare in Europe: Space. Not just physical space. Psychological space. They offer you the ability to wander without a strategy. To encounter rather than consume. Enter a restaurant because it looks interesting, not because it averaged out to four stars from 4,000 online reviews. Sit in the main square and eavesdrop on the locals. Turn off Google Maps. Go get lost.

Americans come to Europe for authenticity then join the longest line to experience its opposite. Don’t do Positano or Lisbon because your neighbors went there. Opt for Erfurt.

“Lost in Place” is about exploring cities that offer surprise, and delight. So if you’re headed to Europe this summer go off-road. Go somewhere you haven’t heard about. I’ll bet you two euros the fountains will be free.

I write about destinations before they become content. Overlooked cities. Hotels as portals into place. I try to find the deeper meanings hiding beneath modern travel. In an age of increasingly standardized tourism, I’m drawn to places that still feel rooted, surprising, unmistakably themselves.

I’m more interested in what a destination can teach us about ourselves, and why some places still resist becoming a bag of cultural Doritos: endlessly packaged, posted, instantly consumed, and forgotten on the departing flight.

Some Strait Talk on Travel

I started this Substack based on the premise that meaningful travel isn’t always to the most exotic destination. “Lost in Place” wasn’t just a playful title. I meant it, as I did when I wrote “Here Not There,” my Nat Geo book on counterintuitive travel destinations.

Both approaches seem prescient now the Iran War is sending gas prices sky high. Gas has climbed to an average of $4.55 a gallon nationally — with some states pushing past $6 — Americans are getting a hard reminder that travel isn’t immune from geopolitics. One-fifth of the world’s oil normally moves through that petro-intestinal tract, the Hormuz Strait. When it tightens, the modern vacation gets indigestion.

The old assumptions start to wobble. Cheap flights vanish. Budget airlines collapse. Baggage fees spike, and a spontaneous week in Tuscany starts looking like a semester of college tuition.

Time for a rethink?

For years, our travel culture has operated on a strange fantasy: Fly farther, spend more, and all to convince us a “meaningful” experience can only exist an ocean away or in an hours-long wait to enter places like the Smokey Mountain National Park or Guardians of the Galaxy. But when economic shocks ripple through the system, we begin asking smarter questions. What if the thing we’re chasing in Munich exists in Ohio? What if the rain forest one thought should be Borneo is quietly sitting in western North Carolina? Might the next great trip be made with footsteps not with a flight that requires pawning your wedding ring at the airport gate?

The media reports travelers are already changing behavior — taking shorter trips, booking closer to home, boarding Amtrak and buses more often, and scrutinizing value harder than before. That doesn’t sound like deprivation to me. It sounds like priorities resetting.

Not every place needs the adjective “luxury” glued to the front of it. Some of America’s most interesting cities are still economical, eccentric, and gloriously, pugnaciously themselves. They haven’t been sanded into an algorithmic sameness yet. You can still hear local accents. You can still afford dessert.

That’s the territory this Substack will keep exploring: intriguing alternatives, overlooked originals, places right in front of our noses even as the rest of the traveling herd guzzles at the same waterholes.

In times like this “Lost in Place” stops being a slogan and becomes a strategy.

Why We Go

After 25 years writing travel stories for National Geographic, I’ve noticed a trend about destinations: we’re arriving too late.

We seem to find them only after they’re buffed up, their narratives agreed upon, and an entertainment district designated. The travel industry calls it discovery. It’s mostly consensus.

What interests me are the destinations they haven’t “fixed” yet, and the more affordable alternates to bucket list places we thought we wanted to see on the crowds go home. Case in point: Letchworth State Park, a grand canyon set not in Arizona but in western New York, with a scale that’s equally compelling.

They can even be familiar places, too. Cities and regions where an older story still peers through a glossy overlay—a Napa that’s not catering to Mrs Bezos and her pals, but one found in the kitchens and workshops that keep it running and where the good stuff isn’t always artfully arranged. Nor are they imitations of more famous attractions. They’re often better. Riga, with its exuberant Art Nouveau buildings is a good example—it’s got the biggest number of them on earth (sorry Paris and Barcelona) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And I’ll make room for interesting hotels—properties that reveal what a place is becoming, not just what its been.

Most won’t be over-touristed nor require a second mortgage to spend a three-day weekend. Though we’re gonna save room for a splurge or two. And I’ll include details that often get edited out—a Parliament more Gothic than London’s, a Gran Torino stretch limo, pancakes better than sex or the second act of a places most people fly over.

After 25 years writing stories for National Geographic Travel, I’ve spent a lot of time inside the yellow border—exploring the world’s most celebrated places.

Lost in Place is about everything just outside it.

The overlooked. The reconsidered. The counterintuitive destinations. Sometimes that means skipping Paris for Riga. Or finding Napa Valley in Napa the city—where the people who build the fantasy actually live. Click the links to read those stories.

Lost in Place

Most trips begin the same way: with a list.

“See this,” they advise. “Do that.” You hit the screens. Scroll TikTok. Ransack Reddit. Get a review. What do you find? A version of a destination that’s already been decided for you—packaged, repeated, and as premeditated as a social influencer’s hair extentions. The journey is completed before you arrive.

I’ve spent a good part of my career experiencing destinations and writing about them. Some of them deserve the ink. Many of them don’t—at least not in the way we’ve been taught to think.

What interests me about place is the “lost” part—what happens beyond that first impression.

It’s that second version of a place. The one that doesn’t announce itself.
The one you notice only if the obvious one cracks like ice on a pond. It’s getting lost, but not in the usual sense. Not lost on a map—lost in expectation, in assumption, in the story you thought you were walking into.

That’s what this is about.

So I’m calling it Lost in Place—the moment when a destination stops behaving the way you expect it to, and starts to make sense on its own terms.

Some of these will be unfamiliar while others will be well known: Dublin, Charleston, Napa. But the version I’m interested in is rarely the one you thought you’d traveled for

I’ve been writing about travel for National Geographic for two decades. In 2024 wrote a book for them called Here Not There that included 100 counterintuitive travel destinations. This is a continuation of that idea, but looser, more immediate, and a little more willing to wander.

I’ll publish a few times a month. No strict schedule, but a steady rhythm. Some pieces will be longer, reported or observed. Others will be shorter—notes, fragments, things noticed in passing that might turn out to matter more than expected.

If there’s a common thread, it’s this:

The first version of a place talks the loudest.
The second take is usually the one that lingers.
